Had a social studies party with my pile of social studies books today. Prepared for a theater performance that was cancelled. Took an evening coffee at Broadway Cafe with my two friends Filip and Filip instead. Talked nonsense. Found ourselves listening to some amazing music. Thanked Filip's friend and his band and felt kind of relieved that our show had been cancelled. Admired the moon for a moment, and now I'm wishing you all a good night sleep.

My beautiful friends were all there, right in the front row. A superhero hug before the concert made my nerves disappear. My little brother was his usual goofy self, playing on the extremely out of tune piano in my dressing room before he went out to the rest of the audience. The black dress I was going to wear ripped just before going on stage, and my inventive mother had to come and rescue the situation. Walking in those high heels made my toe cramp (on stage!) but luckily enough I have an extremely well trained poker face and feet muscles that can handle anything. The feeling I had while standing on stage was magical. Being the music, feeling like one with 90 professional musicians cannot be explained. Having the opportunity to sing with an orchestra made me unable to stop thanking everyone and everything I met afterwards. The sweet flowers I received were almost too many to carry, and in a little white box lay an owl necklace. The mattress that I once never bothered to bring out of my room but that has now been standing in the attic for too long, finally made its use for my best friend again. And that was my extraordinary evening that made everything absolutely wonderful.

The kitchen at the concert hall is stuffed with microwaves.

Even so, musicians race each other at lunch to avoid having to wait in line to warm their food.

It's quite a funny sight.

Taking a five minute break from this surreal chapter of my life to pop in and say hi. I would love to write a whole page describing all the different factors in my life that make me feel like a superhero right now (one in particular makes me feel like the ultimate superhero of all times), but I'll save that for another time. Meanwhile, keep your fingers crossed for me. Singing with an orchestra isn't something you get to do everyday.

Surviving The Holocaust

A few days ago, a Polish survivor of The Holocaust came to visit our school. He had a one and a half hour lecture about his childhood and how he grew up in the Nazi's ghetto for Jews and later on was placed in a concentration camp when he was a little boy. He described and explained a lot of horrible things, but something that has been stuck on my mind this week was the chart of all the different badges that were sewn on to trousers and jackets of the prisoners to mark for what particular reason they where placed in a concentration camp. The list was infinite! You could be a prisoner for being "politically wrong", an emigrant, a homosexual, mentally ill, a beggar, an alcoholic, a pacifist; there was a symbol for basically everything. Can you imagine that someone actually sat down and came up with these symbols and their meanings? Decided what color triangle should mark what kind of wrong person you are and why you don't deserve to live? It just doesn't seem humane. It's hard to make sense of how a human being can treat another human being so brutally. At one point he described how the Nazi's had thrown newborn babies out of a hospital window when they were gathering people in trucks for the camps. They couldn't be bothered to run up and down four flights of stairs to get them before stuffing them in the back of a truck, where they probably would die anyway. It's disgusting how people can be so evil.

I usually state that I don't believe in evil people, only in evil actions,

but sometimes I can't help doubting that.

Waffle making

Alexander and I woke up this morning and decided to make waffles, so we plugged some good music in to the good speakers and started messing the kitchen up. And no, we didn't eat bananas with our waffles. Practiced the Porgy and Bess duet with Eric after that. Someday, I want to learn how to play some kind of brass instrument. Trombone looks so difficult though.

I felt like growing myself a pair of wings and taking off flying today. It amazes me how much gratitude over life you can feel by just acknowledging that something as simple as a blue sky and pink clouds can be so beautiful. Lost myself for a while in a new book after breakfast ("I have a new mantra: live everyday from the crack of dawn until I can't keep my eyes open any longer."), grabbed my microphone and steered my feet towards school for a little session with our jazz group.

After the concert yesterday, I was greeted by two very delighted children; my all time favorites Monna and Iisa. They were so full of joy and energy, it made my heart all fuzzy and overwhelmed. I've missed the evenings where they fall asleep in my lap while watching their Finnish cartoons that I don't understand a word of, the arguments over what to name my Barbie doll (I always get the one with cut off hair) and the sneaky comments that are supposed to make up my mind about those silly bedtime rules. It got me thinking of my childhood, and I came up with a long list of things I used to enjoy doing as a kid.

Building a tent in my room out of blankets and pillows is something that I miss a lot. I always thought it was so magical, how something so ugly and messy on the outside could be so enchanting and exciting on the inside. It always felt so adventurous, even though it probably wasn't near as thrilling as it would have been finding a real treasure map or exploring the hidden corners of the world. Still, entering that tent would always feel like entering some sort of wonderland.

Found a little visitor in my bed this morning! What a lazy dog he is. Very cozy though. Sometimes I mistake him for a stuffed toy. Or a sheepskin when he's sleeping. Cuddled up next to him after eating breakfast (I love going back to bed after breakfast) and did some reading for a while. Stephen King writes some scary stuff. I'm so aware of the fact that I almost always regret reading out of that short story book of his when I'm the only one at home (well except for Oscar. I have a hard time believing he can scare any demons or monsters away though. He's too white and fluffy), but I still can't help myself. Found myself smiling at other thoughts after I forced myself to put that darn book down though. That smile, the kind that takes me by surprise sometimes, has started to show up more and more lately. It's quite pleasant actually.

I wish you all a splendid Saturday! I've invited my dearest friends over for the evening, and I'm guessing we'll be doing some really girly things.

The tension has been like a rubber band between us. I thought it might be pulled back too far after a while and we would end up smashing into each other, never being able to be close to each other again because of it. Luckily, we were somehow able to cut that band right across the middle and continue to be close. The bits of rubber band are still hanging there, but it's nice to know that they're not stiff and causing anger anymore. Actually, I don't think we will mind them hanging there at all.

A very inspired Alexander

My energy has been drained out of me like a leaking oil tank this week. A lot to do, a lot of emotions, both good and bad. I think I'm now beginning to breath normally again though.

Alexander has been playing a lot of piano at home lately, but he hasn't been so keen on the idea of taking lessons from anybody. My guess is, that last time he took lessons he played classical, and therefore associates lessons with that sort of style. Took him to see our school's jazz piano teacher play tonight (he, a guitarist and bassist from school and a singer/former student played at a club. It was great!), hoping that he might want to take a few lessons from him. It was like watching a child opening presents on Christmas. Now I'll just have to wait and see...

Eating blood orange while listening to dad practice the viola next door is giving me a kind of soothing affect on my mind this evening. During these past days there has settled a big, unpredictable sun inside of me. At every sunrise, I can feel it radiating warmth and happiness inside of my chest, and sometimes it's so overwhelming that I don't know what to do with it. It was nice taking the time to think about how it actually feels. And it was nice taking the time to discover how I'm coming to like the idea of it living there more and more.

I wonder what Siamese twins do when they go to the movies or a concert where you need to buy tickets. Do they have to pay for two or one? If they can share a seat it would only be fair for them to pay for one ticket, but in one way they're still two individuals. I have got to stop thinking about random questions like this. ANYWAY...

It struck me today that the way we spend so much free time at school is kind of amazing. I don't think I know of any other high school that has students so ambitious that they stay at school til sometimes 9 pm. I guess it's a different situation since a lot of our school work involves music and practicing which is really handy to do at a music school, but even so, I'm pretty sure other music high schools in this town don't willingly stay at school so late. And the fact that they ALLOW us to stay there so late tells us what a professional music school we go to and what dedicated people we are surrounded by. Point blank, I'm proud of being one of the devoted students who goes there.

My Urbanears have arrived (I'm very pleased), and in preparation for the youth orchestra concert, I'm learning as much as possible about the story about Orfeus and Eurydike, and how Orfeus, the God of song, was given a chance (by singing so beautifully) to save his Eurydike from the underworld if he promised to lead her out of there without looking back to make sure it really was her. As in many Greek mythologies, he fails, and she stumbles back down to the masters of the underworld, Hades and Charon. What a moron.

A beautiful feeling

There is so much beauty in life. Some types of beauty are just impossible to explain though. Like the feeling of beauty you inexplicably can get while listening to a beautiful song or while gazing over a view that you'll never in your entire life be able to explain to anyone. Keep in mind that beauty doesn't always have to be happy, or what may seem beautiful to someone else though. Finding a song or a view like that often gives me one of those feelings of beauty inside. And I'm not talking about a pretty picture of a pink flower, or a good tune that has been played and listened to on the radio over a thousand times, but music or a sight that you, personally, relate to without knowing why. Something that can make you look or listen for a long time, trying to figure out what that hidden something might be, without succeeding, because there is really nothing to discover. I wouldn't call it an illusion. More like a dream. I'd like to think that we dream to work through feelings and emotions that we haven't had the time or mentality to work through while we're awake and in control of our thoughts. Maybe relating to a song or a view helps us process these thoughts as much as our dreams do. Or maybe it doesn't help us at all. Maybe it just makes us reflect over something that doesn't have a substantial answer. That doesn't make it less beautiful though.

These special songs of mine vary a lot, depending on moments, thoughts, obstacles.

I have a few very special ones right now though. I think I just discovered a new one actually.

Yesterday was the seniors' last performance of their final year project with the orchestra, and for the last concert, sophomores and freshmen always get to sing in the choir for the "extended version" of the concert which was parts of Carmen this year. It was amazing. They are amazing. And I'm so proud of being a part of this school. Can't wait to see the musical they're rehearsing for now, but mainly, I can't wait for OUR class to put on an even better show and hopefully an unforgettable musical! We have two years left to practice like crazy and become some kick ass performers, which we actually already are, so I have big expectations for us.

We did the craziest thing at school today! All the students who study some kind of art program (music, dance, drama, photography or painting/sculpture) have class together every Tuesday where we try all the different programs. Today we prepared masks that we will be using later on for some kind of project, and we really got down to business! I wasn't so fond of the smearing-Vaseline-all-over-your-face part, but oh didn't we look fine with our faces covered in plaster!

Look close and you can see that I'm wearing my Hello Kitty socks today...

I got a comment from...I'm not quite sure from who actually...about the Urbanears, telling me that the sound is great and asking me if I'm getting them or not. Well, a pair of red Urbanears are ORDERED! A friend of mine has a pair of purple ones that I tried on and I definitely think they're worth the money. They are stylish, have good sound and are small enough to take with you anywhere.

I was so flattered when Agnes asked me to guest her blog yesterday! Apparently, I was wearing some kick ass sales clothes that she really wanted to write a post about, so after school we took off to a nearby park and she snapped some (quite impressive!) photos. Aside from posing for Agnes's camera in the freezing cold, I've been busy with theater performances. These were the first two performances for me, but the rest of the cast has done seven already! I had too much to do before Christmas, so the girl I share the role with has been playing the part until now. Next time is in March! Hope we all still remember our lines...

I think my next purchase will have to be a pair of urbanears! I'm leaning towards the red ones, but the pastel green ones have my interest too. I absolutely love the wearing-headphones-as-an-accessory idea with lots of colors to choose from. The big question is: how good is the sound? Some claim it's absolutely terrible, others say the exact opposite. I might have to try them out for myself somewhere first.

Talking about summer, I should start planning my summer vacation. It would be really great to do a play or musical or something instead of having an ordinary summer job, but then I'd also really want to go to the states again.

I'm getting more and more excited about moving out and being able to decorate a whole home on my own! Can't wait to find lots of vintage, urban looking furniture. The good thing about interior design like this is that you can find some gorgeous stuff in second hand shops, which means you don't have to spend a fortune on your home. I guess the hard part is being able to get an urban looking apartment that won't actually fall apart with basically no money after graduating high school.

Decided, very spontaneously, to fly over to England with grandma on Wednesday to visit my British family who I haven't seen in ages. It's quite bizarre how I see my American relatives more than my English ones, since they only live a couple of hours away, while it takes us more than a day to fly to the States. Anyway, I'm looking forward to that! I think we'll be staying for about a week.

Merry Christmas!

Had an absolutely fabulous Christmas eve! I'm so thankful for all my presents (Victoria's Secret underwear, the Vagabond shoes I'd wished for, an amplifier, perfume, books, THE glittery nail polish from O.P.I...some examples) and mom's Christmas food was delicious, as usual. Alexander ate so much he thought he was going to barf though.

I've been watching SO much tv while I've been sick. Mostly Criminal Minds, just because Mathew Gray Gubler is such a sweetheart. Looked up some interviews with him (I've had a lot of time to spend), and he's such a character! It may be because he's addicted to coffee, but he seems like a really energetic and hilarious person.

No, I haven't closed down my blog, just took a little break. Totally back now though!

So I've mainly been sick during the time you haven't heard from me. REALLY sick actually. Like sleeping-for-10-days-straight-with-a-40-degrees-fever-and-a-really-annoying-flu sick. I missed school's Christmas concert AND the jazz gig AND the Lucia trip to Hungary. I was pissed off, but I guess none of it would have been that fun anyway, figuring how sick I was.

Being away from school for 10 days made me realize how much I love my classmates though, so I managed to drag myself to school this last week before Christmas vacation. It's crazy that it's Christmas eve already tomorrow!

Today I got my hair cut. It looks a lot shorter in real life than in the picture (a bit TOO short), but it doesn't really matter since my hair has been growing insanely fast lately!

Löfstad and orchestra gig

Busy, busy weekend! Friday I took the day off from school to be able to join the rehearsal for the orchestra's family concert. Saturday and Sunday was a mix between a Christmas singing gig at Löfstad castle and rehearsals and the concert with the orchestra (which was a lot of fun!). Had time to practice some songs with dad for this Friday's gig too! Anton, Alfred, Josef and I are doing a little Christmas jazz performance in Norsholm.

Beyond retro and Madame Butterfly in Stockholm

Went on a field trip to Stockholm yesterday with all the music students. Started off at the Royal Music College which somehow only seemed to give me agony about what to do with my life. It was fun though! We wandered around in Stockholm, ended up in a Beyond Retro shop, ate some food and then met up with the rest of the students to see Madame Butterfly at the Opera. The bus ride home was crazy.

Threw a surprise birthday party for Ida yesterday. We tricked her into saying that we were going to a different party, planned a kidnapping and then drove her to the real party where lots of people were waiting for her. I would say it was a quite successful night!

Oh my, what happened? It's gone a week already, and I haven't posted ANYTHING.

It was September 11th 2011 last Friday, and at 11.11 we went outside to take a picture that will remind us how incredibly awesome we are to have experienced 11/11-11 11.11! And the story behind the picture of Alexander, is that we were having a stare off and he suddenly blew up like a blowfish which totally made me lose. Sometimes I have a hard time believing we're related....

Since I downed all the plum, blackberry tea grandma brought with her from the states, I now have a new favorite; rhubarb.

Kurt Elling concert

Oh how I've been waiting for this day to come! Drove directly to Stockholm with Ida, Rebecka, Agnes and Emma after a quite short day at school. We ate some good Indian food before experiencing an unforgettable Kurt Elling concert with quite a few other music students from school. I'm so grateful for this evening!

Tomorrow's time for the High School exhibition (feels like it was yesterday that I was one of all the ninth graders going there to find out more about all the different schools) where Olle and I are going to be guides until lunchtime. After that I'll be joining the band at the dance studio where I'll be singing a little something.

I had such a bizarre morning this morning! I woke up at 2.30 am, couldn't go back to sleep (but at the same time I wasn't wide awake), waited in bed until my alarm went off (I live in Sweden. In Sweden it's pitch dark until 8 am) and after roaming around doing nothing I started to read Stephen King's "Nightmares and Dreamscapes". Big mistake! I spent the rest of the morning, before going to school, all alone in the dark kitchen, imagining how these little demon children from the book were hiding in every corner while I ate my breakfast....

Aside from that, my day has been splendid though!

Had so much fun today! Started off with the interview, where Anton, Alfred and I answered questions about school and our future music career. Hung out with the TV crew (Åsa is such a sweetheart!) before filming my singing performance. Anton and Alfred did an amazing job as well! Sjöberg and Dahlberg show

Grandma's finally here, we have fall break next week and on Friday I'll be on Åsa Sjöberg and Ragnar Dahlberg's tv show "Sjöberg och Dahlberg". Åsa sang before me at Culture Night, and she came up and asked if I wanted to guest on their show. I'll be interviewed before I get to perform a song with the band there, and then it's going to be shown on tv the weekend after that. I'm so excited!

Today I went with dad to listen to the orchestra's concert with Orphei Drängar, Sweden's best male choir. They're amazing! Walked back home under a wonderful pinkish, orange sky. Wouldn't it be nice if Autumn could last longer?

Dad and I found out a couple of days ago that Kurt Elling is coming to Stockholm on November 11! Since we're quite a few jazz singers in class, I thought we might as well fill our car and bring them with us, so now I'm all excited over a coming trip to Stockholm's concert hall with Dad, Agnes, Rebecka, Ida and Emma.

Friday's family concert with class was a blast! I have to say that all of us are surprisingly good, but we all have our own styles so we're still a very variable bunch. Tomorrow it's time for Marching For Love, a concert where 500 music students from Norrköping build a choir and put on a charity concert with a group from Africa.

I remember when i was little, and Nelly Furtado's album, "Whoa, Nelly!", from year 2000 was all I listened to. Today I listened to some of her old songs again (Turn Off The Light, I'm Like A Bird, Legend), and it's a shame that she hasn't kept her original sound! I really like the songs she does with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland (Give It To Me, Promiscuous), but I'd love to hear some new music in the same style she had 10 years ago. I'm already trying to decide which of her old songs I want to perform.

Last year we had a substitute teacher from Hungary (he's Swedish, just lives in Hungary) in music, and now he has asked eight of us to come to Budapest and sing a Lucia repertoire for the Swedish Embassy with him! We do have a lot of performing with school those days around Lucia, but who says no to an opportunity like that? I also got a little acting job in the Symphony Orchestra's next children's concert.
